Join Mason Conservation District and HOPE Garden Project in our Gleaning Program this season to gather extra food for our local food banks and community food programs.
Mason Conservation District wants to assist in Linking Food to Families through it's Mason-Shelton Food Chain Program.
Linking Food to Families is a program that works to reduce local produce waste, provide more fresh food to those in need, and build community. The Mason Conservation District works with all kinds of farmers with all levels of skill. You don’t have to be an agricultural expert to harvest produce, or make a produce delivery, or even grow a row of potatoes in your own backyard. The District’s Mason-Shelton Food Chain program is designed to be sustainable by volunteers – regular folks pitching in wherever and however they can to keep the chain going. If you have the ability to help harvest or can transport harvested produce from farm to bank a couple days a week, sign up to be a volunteer. Harvest “parties” could also be a great idea for students or local civic organizations interested in community outreach efforts. There are so many opportunities for you to serve in the mission to end hunger, right in your local community.
Interested in volunteering with our Gleaning Program? If you enjoy being outdoors you can help to pick, sort, and weigh produce that is harvested from local farms and gardens. Volunteers should be comfortable bending, stooping, and occasionally lifting 10-20 pounds. Gleaning events usually last 2-3 hours and can occur on weekends and/or weekdays.
If you have questions about the Linking Food to Families Program, contact our Outreach Coordinator via email at [email protected] |
Are you a local Farmer, Commercial Grower or have fruit trees? Our gleaning volunteers can usually help harvest your donation, or we can pick up pre-harvested donations from you. We also welcome drop-offs. Please fill out the Gleaning Donation Form, or feel free to contact our Outreach Coordinator via email at [email protected] to make arrangements.
