Water Resource Inventory Area (WRIA) 14 Citizen Committee

What is WRIA 14?
The Kennedy-Goldborough Basin (WRIA 14) covers about 381 square miles of southwest Puget Sound.  The area is drained by 139 independent streams; no major river system is present in this watershed.  Streams are generally lowland types with headwaters originating from springs, surface water drainage, wetlands, beaver ponds, or small lakes.

What is a WRIA Citizen Committee and how can I get involved?
In the late 1990s, several salmon species were listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.  In response, the Washington Legislature founded the Salmon Recovery Funding Board (SRFB) and the Lead Entity (LE) process to ensure local expertise and interests help guide decisions to protect and restore salmon habitat.  Legislation enacted in 1998 recognizes that salmon recovery does not come from state scientists or politicians, but rather the local community and local experts working together to understand the needs of the fish.  It also recognizes that local perspectives coupled with a review at the state level ensures a coordinated approach that promotes the best projects, from scientific, technical and community perspectives.

The WRIA 14 Citizen Committee meets at the Mason County Public Works Building- Meeting Room A on the third Thursday of the month at 10am.  On an annual basis, the committee makes recommendations to the Salmon Recovery Funding Board on habitat projects in WRIA 14 that would help achieve salmon recovery in the area.
