Adiantum aleudicum
4 to 30 inches tall. Grows well in shady, moist, humid forests, or on rocks and cliffs, often within the spray zone of waterfalls. Deciduous perennial with few fronds. Often found growing in large colonies. Has delicate airy fronds that remind many hikers of waterfalls. Dark brown to purplish-black petioles divide into 2 and then divide again, spreading parallel to the ground, radially to form 6 to 10-inch “fingers”. Native uses; basketry design, tea made from the leaves were used as a hair wash, and the Quinault burnt the leaves and rubbed ashes in their hair to make it long, shiny, and black. Leaves were also chewed for medicinal purposes.
Five Plugs.
